Understanding STEM at Great Hearts
Great Hearts does not solely strive for Truth, Beauty, and Goodness through the Humanities. This pursuit continues in the disciplines of math and science, where a scholar seeks the essence of reality as well. In fact, in the Ancient World, many of the great philosophers were also scientists. So to at Great Hearts, we view a liberal arts education as only complete if it includes a rigorous formation in math and science.
Great Heart schools present math and science study as another building block in a student’s well-rounded education. Through experimentation and the study of natural phenomena, students strive to discover and understand the guiding principles and ideas behind each topic of study. Students discuss scientific ideas to further their understanding and apply critical thinking to their observations.
The same can be said about the math classes—students derive equations for themselves based on observations and constantly build off previous topics to understand new ones. Teachers give students the opportunity to understand the beauty of math without allowing students to be caught up in simply memorizing equations. Instead of the teacher presenting problems and their solutions, the students are given opportunities to help each other and use their skills to benefit each other—one student gaining mastery of a topic by explaining, the other gaining understanding by learning it from a different perspective.
And for the students that have interests outside of the math and science classes, each academy has its own unique set of clubs supported by the faculty (such as a robotics club, a coding club, or a math and logic club) that further quench a student’s curiosity. Inside and outside of the classroom, Great Hearts provides the means for students to begin a life-long journey in each of the liberal arts disciplines.
