Portrait of Athletic Director LeggeKayla Legge, Director of Athletics at Trivium Preparatory Academy, was named the AIA 2A Conference President, voted in by 61 athletic directors in the 2A Conference. During the election process, a director is nominated by someone in the conference, followed by a formal recommendation from another within the conference. “Duane Ediger from [Scottsdale Prep] nominated me, and Jon Rickey spoke on my behalf, and he was so kind,” said Legge. “There were a few other people in the running, but when voted on by the entire conference, I received the highest number of votes.”

“Kayla is by far one of the most organized athletic directors in Arizona,” said Jon Rickey, Arizona Network Director of Athletics. “It was no surprise to me that she was considered and then eventually elected to be president of the 2A. She is well-respected and is known as someone who will communicate well, host well, and always follow up when needed.”

The AIA or Arizona Interscholastic Association is a voluntary association of public and private high schools which was established by and is responsible to its members. The democratic governance of the AIA provides representation and input opportunities to all its member schools.

Legge is currently serving as president-elect and working alongside the current President, Mike Elder from Northland Prep in Flagstaff. “This coming 2023-2024 school year, I will officially take over the conference as my own and mentor the new president-elect. The president is the liaison between the AIA and the athletic directors in our conference. We attend legislative meetings and help to better the AIA as a whole. On top of that, we are in charge of making sure the ‘day to day’ of the conference runs smoothly such as running and scheduling our 2A meetings, hosting player all conference voting for the athletes, helping to bring any new by-laws to light within the AIA,” said Legge.

This recognition means a lot to Legge, who is looking forward to helping change and improve on the systems that she believes could be better. “I love sports and it was a huge staple for me when I was in school. For me this is an opportunity to continue to help our students to be able to find that love too. I am very excited to work alongside the 50+ other schools in our conference and serve them to the best of my ability,” said Legge.

Rickey is confident that Legge is the best person for the job. “Everyone in the 2A knows that Kayla can and will get things done. She is a very organized leader who is always trying to improve systems and procedures to make the experiences of her athletes better! She is known and respected even by the Executive Leadership of the AIA for those reasons as well. Not an easy thing to do for someone of her age,” said Rickey. “Just like Duane Ediger at [Scottsdale Prep] has done so well for so many years, Kayla will lead the 2A with a lot of humbled-confidence and will continue to make a great name for our Great Hearts schools in and throughout the AIA!”
