At the end of each school year, fifth graders at Archway Glendale are asked to write a speech about one of the nine virtues they have learned during their elementary education at Great Hearts. Today, we will explore the virtue of Wisdom as written by rising sixth grader, Hudson D.

Wisdom is an important virtue. Wisdom is having the knowledge to do the right thing for the greater good. Wisdom is not only having the knowledge to do the right thing but requires action-making choices for the greater good as well.

In our literature studies, we learn of Jethro Creighton. Jethro had to take on a lot of responsibility after his father became ill. For example, he looked after the family farm and made tough decisions when his brother, a deserter, came home from the Army. But Jethro was wise for a young man and was confident it would all work out.

In our history lessons on the Civil War, we learned of high officials having to make tough decisions during wartime. They had hundreds of thousands of men who were counting on them and whose lives depended on them. They used their knowledge of leadership and wisdom from their experiences to lead and guide properly.

I see this virtue frequently demonstrated at Archway Glendale. When classmates are struggling, other students go out of their way to help. We always learn and grow from our mistakes.  If one does not learn from their mistakes, no wisdom is gained. Although wisdom is usually associated with age, that is not always the case. Just the other day my mom who is our school Nurse and…..well let’s just say she is older than we are, gained a lot of wisdom from a first grader who knew a lot about bugs.

You have to plan your time wisely and get to class without being tardy.  I sincerely hope that Archway Glendale 5th grade carries this virtue to Glendale Prep.
