Thank You to the Faculty and Staff Braving Record Heat to Ensure Student Safety at Pickup

Archway Arete August 8, 2025

When the final bell rings at Archway Arete, the school day may be over for students, but for many faculty members, an important responsibility is just beginning. Each afternoon, dedicated teachers and staff step outside into the Arizona heat to direct traffic, guide parents through the pickup line, and, most important of all, keep students safe as they make their way to waiting vehicles.

“Our first full week back to school was met with record-breaking heat,” shared Headmaster Cassie Mason, who found a creative way to thank her hard-working, and often over-heated teachers working the pavement after school.

To show her appreciation, Mason and her husband decided to surprise the pickup crew with a refreshing treat. “With the help of Mr. Mason, I cooked up some mango syrup, sliced limes, and had all the fixings for a cool treat,” she explained. “Raspados were assembled and handed out to our traffic team during afternoon pick-up to refresh those who were working hard in the 118-degree heat.”

Raspados are a popular Mexican dessert consisting of shaved ice topped with flavored syrups, often made from fresh fruit. They are similar to snow cones but typically feature more natural fruit flavors and can include chunks of fruit. The word “raspado” comes from the Spanish word “raspar,” meaning “to scrape,” referring to how the ice is shaved

The treat was greatly appreciated by the team, who looks for any way to keep cool while standing on the heated pavement surrounded by reflective vehicles. Directing traffic after school is no small task. Especially at the beginning of the school year, temperatures often soar into the triple digits. Yet, faculty members put on their safety vests, grab their walkie-talkies, and stand ready with smiles, waves, and clear directions. Their work ensures a smooth, orderly dismissal and gives parents peace of mind knowing their children are in capable hands from the moment they leave the classroom to the moment they step into the car.

“Thank you, Archway Arete team, for being helpful, humble, and compassionate and ensuring our dismissal runs safely and efficiently!” Mason said.

The faculty members who take on this daily duty go above and beyond for the community. They may not be in the spotlight during pickup time, but they are quietly making an enormous difference. One car, one child, and one wave at a time. Be sure to return a smile, give a thumbs up, or if the line allows, tell them how much they are appreciated.
