Spring In-Service Touches the Heart of the Work of Teaching

Great Hearts Academies February 9, 2026

Great Hearts faculty and staff from academies across the Valley recently took a half day for the annual Spring In-Service, which focuses on teacher formation as a learner, providing time for connection through new knowledge, experiences, and skills.

What may seem at first glance like a relatively mundane and utilitarian event in the life of our schools, is actually at the heart of what we do as educators. To quote David V. Hicks in his book, Norms and Nobility: A Treatise on Education, “We can only teach from who we are, what we love, and what we know; we must, therefore, engage life-long learning…”

At Great Hearts, our purpose is to cultivate the minds and hearts of students through the pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. That pursuit is not just the pursuit of the students, but of the greater school community, faculty and the student body, working towards that common purpose alongside one another. “Classical education is as much about [the teacher’s] formation as it is about the students, ” shared Great Hearts Chief Academic Officer Jake Tawey.

The options for faculty included a large catalog of opportunities to learn and grow, everything from traditional professional development sessions and seminars to art instruction, art appreciation, team sports, hiking, stage experiences, and concerts.

One attendee noted, “When I read the catalog of offerings this year, I found at least 8 options that all sounded really interesting. This was the most appealing batch of choices yet, in my opinion… I left feeling positive and uplifted.”

“This year’s options were almost entirely ‘Teachers for Teachers,’ showcasing the talents, knowledge, and interests of our faculty and staff members, while offering a variety of activities/topics and locations to all participants,” explained Amy Gottry, Regional Manager of Professional Development. “The response to the call for leaders was amazing, as teachers stepped up to lead among their fellow colleagues and share something they love.”

A teacher in attendance said, “It was great to have such a variety of adventures to choose from. It was difficult to decide between feeding mind or body. Thankfully soul was fed either way.”

“It was an awesome experience to get to try a new activity with colleagues,” shared another.

Spring In-Service offered a meaningful pause in the rhythm of the school year. It was a chance to step out of routines and learn alongside one another. Whether the afternoon was spent stretching the mind, moving the body, or simply enjoying time with colleagues, the experience reminded attendees that they grow best in community. As they return to their classrooms this week, they carry with them a renewed energy, fresh perspective, and a shared sense of purpose to carry them through the second half of the school year.
