Honoring our Great-Hearted Veterans: Dustin Jans

Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep November 10, 2025

On this Veteran’s Day, we are privileged to count among our faculty and staff the men and women who have worn the uniform of our nation’s armed forces. Their courage, discipline, and devotion to service embody the same virtues we cultivate in the minds and hearts of our students.

Dustin Jans has served as the morning crossing guard at Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep for the past two years. But before protecting our students in the crosswalk, Jans protected our country in the military. “I served in the U.S. Army from late 2001 to early 2010, a little over eight years in total,” explained Jans. “I was part of the Infantry branch, starting out as a machine gunner and eventually becoming a squad leader. During that time, I deployed to Iraq three times and served with the 101st Airborne Division, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and the 25th Infantry Division. I obtained the rank of Staff Sargent throughout my military career.”

Jans believes his military background has had a strong impact on how he approaches his school position. “It taught me to stay alert, vigilant, and disciplined, which helps me ensure that everyone remains safe as they move through the crosswalk. I take that responsibility seriously and apply the same level of awareness and commitment that I developed during my time in the service.”

“I truly enjoy what I do for the school and the community,” shared Jans. “Being part of Great Hearts has been a rewarding experience. I really appreciate the supportive environment, the wonderful staff, and the families who are part of the school community. It’s a great place to serve and make a positive impact.”

On behalf of the entire Great Hearts community, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served. Your courage in defense of our country and your continued commitment to forming young hearts and minds inspire us daily. Thank you for living out the virtues that make both a great citizen and a great educator.
