Glendale Prep Students Join Together to Commemorate 9/11

For many of us, we vividly remember September 11^th, 2001, as the day everything changed. We can still recall exactly where we were when we heard the news that the first tower collapsed 25 years ago. But for our students, 9/11 is a history lesson rather than a memory. At Glendale Prep that moment in history remains close to the hearts of the student body who are only separated by one generation from the attacks on our nation. Together they are serving one another to commemorate this National Day of Remembrance and Service.

Sixth graders worked alongside their junior and senior mentors to create note cards. “We have red, white, and blue in honor of 9/11,” explained Daisy Rose Estrada, a senior at Glendale Prep. “We’re creating these cards to tape all over the school. So, tomorrow will be decked out in red, white, and blue. And we’re writing a virtue on them explaining what the virtue means.” Estrada also explained that many of the notecards also include quotes about September 11.

One card had a quote from President George W. Bush during the dedication of the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial on September 11, 2008. “One of the worst days in history saw some of the bravest acts in Americans’ history. We’ll always honor the heroes of 9/11.”

The mentorship program at Glendale Prep is designed help 6^th graders make the transition from primary school into secondary education. Juniors and seniors are assigned as mentors to smaller groups of students. “There’s a bunch of unknowns for them. So, it’s really nice to have the upperclassmen kind of be there for support and guidance in any questions they may have as they enter this new stage of life,” shared Estrada.

Projects like this one bring our students, no matter their grade level, together in remembrance. “A lot of brave people stood there. Our first responders, the people who took over the plane,” added Estrada. “So, it’s just a representation of one of the ways 9/11 has left an impact and what happened on that day.”
