Giving Tuesday: Meet Mr. Gatlin at Great Hearts Harveston

Great Hearts Harveston December 1, 2025

At Great Hearts, we believe that the most important part of a child’s education is the teacher standing before them. Formed by classical education himself, Mr. Austin Gatlin, our Lower School Music and Latin teacher, brings a deep love for the fine arts, language, and virtue to Great Hearts Harveston

Each school day, Mr. Gatlin guides our K-5th graders through music and Latin, two core subjects that are a part of every scholars’ daily curriculum. He graduated from LSU with a degree in Vocal Music Education and has taught private piano and voice lessons, where he deepened his love for nurturing young minds. His study of Latin began in primary school and continued through college, and has given him a rich appreciation for the language he now teaches with such enthusiasm.

Mr. Gatlin was drawn to Great Hearts because of our commitment to forming well-rounded young people. “I appreciate that Great Hearts is intentional about both what we teach and how we teach it, always aiming for depth, clarity, and virtue,” he shares. “Because I attended a classical school myself, I knew exactly what to expect when stepping into the Great Hearts environment—the structure, values, and high expectations for scholars felt familiar and exciting.”

Teaching music and Latin to our Lower School scholars gives Mr. Gatlin the joy of introducing them to beautiful courses and foundational disciplines at the very start of their lives. In music, scholars learn the foundations of singing and performance, and explore composers like Handel, Mozart, and Vivaldi. In Latin, he cherishes those “lightbulb” moments when students make the connection between Latin and the English language.

Hiring teachers like Mr. Gatlin would not be possible without the support of our families. This Giving Tuesday, please consider making a gift to Community Investment in honor of our amazing educators!
