BLOG: Day 1 in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. March 12, 2018

Great Hearts freshman, Brighton Greathouse from Glendale Prep, received an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. She will be blogging her experience for Great Hearts.

BLOG ENTRY 1: BEFORE THE CONFERENCE

I am a freshman at Glendale Prep and sit on the youth advisory board for Peoria. After writing responses to the proposed questions and then an interview, I was chosen to participate in the Congressional City Conference. Youth delegates and city members from the states all come together to attend meetings, workshops, and network. Youth play an important role in this process by working on advocacy skills and leadership.

The first day [in Washington D.C.] consisted of mostly site seeing but we also had an amazing opportunity to view the capital from above. A member from the Salt River Project helped us gain access to a rooftop near the capital and it was extraordinary. The craziest thing about visiting D.C. is the ability to experience the monuments and the things we learn about in history through textbooks in real life. These buildings have been here for years and years and still remain important and functioning. The impact these monuments and facts the museums share helps understand history from a different perspective. Tomorrow is the first day of conferences and I am looking forward to the workshops and meeting all the people from various states.
