Alexander Curry won 2nd place at the 2017 Phoenix Rotary Speaking Contest.

Scottsdale Preparatory Academy junior, Alexander Curry, recently won 2nd place for the upper-division level in the 2017 Phoenix Rotary Speaking Contest.

This year will mark the 87th year that the competition has taken place and Alexander will join the ranks of an elite group to be honored with this award.

The Phoenix Rotary 100 club has a longstanding tradition of aiding youth in the community and giving back in a myriad of ways. The competition involves students going head-to-head to answer specific questions or respond to prompts given. Then, competitors are given half an hour to prepare a three to five minute speech.

There is a high level of rigor involved and only the most confident, informed, and qualified students advance to the final rounds.

For winning second place, Alexander was awarded a $3,000 scholarship to be used for tuition for the college of his choosing.

At Great Hearts, our curriculum aims to prepare our scholars to be competitive and successful in the wider realm of communication. As part of the curriculum at our schools, students at both the Archway and Preparatory levels are required to memorize and recite poems for an audience. In this way, we are able to build up our students’ public speaking ability and their memorization skills. Both factors that helped Alexander cinch the win at the competition.

We are proud to see Alexander and other students like him succeed.
