Archway Summer Camp
Our unique Archway Summer Camps are designed to cultivate the Great Hearts’ mission for our amazing scholars. Each week will feature a distinctive theme for K-5th grades with exciting activities based on the wide range of interests children have – science, math, art, literature, athletic skills, etc. Our goal is to make sure each child enjoys their time at camp while stimulating their minds and deepening their sense of wonder.
Week 1 (June 3-7) – Exploration Station: It was John Muir that said, “With every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” This week campers will receive more than their share of nature and all the fascinating wonders that it holds. Our campers will get to walk among five different habitats of Earth- the Arctic Circle, the Amazon Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, the Sahara Desert, and the Andes Mountains. Campers will explore brine shrimp, symbiotic relationships, extreme climates, the effects of altitude on our bodies, and more! On Friday there will be a presentation to showcase the vast explorations experienced through the week. Parents and guests are invited to attend!
Week 2 (June 10-14) – Celebration of Nations: Come join us in our celebration of nations. Learn about games, traditions, inventions, and foods from around the world. Campers will experience performances from a different culture, as well as share their own genealogy with their peers. Two examples of art that campers will create are Japanese Gyotaku, ink prints made from fish, and Andrinke symbols from Africa. Campers will make their own Khon masks from the traditional Thai epic, Ramakien, making a colorful addition to their performances at the end of the week. Parents and guests are invited to attend!
Week 3 (June 17-21) – Living Literature: Stories let us take our imagination to new worlds leaving our current world behind. Characters become friends and we can experience life with them. Each day our campers will enter a storybook world. They will encounter living in the wild in The Jungle Book; farming and friendship in Charlotte’s Web; bravery and honor with the Knights of the Round Table in King Arthur; a revival of nature and spirit in The Secret Garden; and go over the virtues of wisdom, compassion, and courage in The Wizard of Oz. Activities for each day will revolve around the storybook theme and end with a performance at the end of the week for families to come see!
Week 4 (June 24-28) – Time Trekkers: Time Trekker week will transport campers through time to experience Prehistoric Ages, the Renaissance, the Victorian Era, and the early to mid-century 1900’s. Campers will learn and engage in activities based on significant events and movements during these time periods. Campers will be able to explore dinosaur excavations, Renaissance tapestries, life during the Civil War, and architecture from the early to mid-20th Century. This week will go down in history!
